Why trains? |wow gold
Here’s a look at the four-player battle mode in the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS. I got to try out this multiplayer mode at Nintendo’s office last week. Here’s how it breaks down: Each player controls a differently-colored Link. You have no special weapons, not even a sword. Your mission is to collect as many of the the golden triangular Force Gems before time runs out. These will drop down from the heavens, and you’ll be able to find them by looking at the level map. But really, what you’re trying to do is attack your friends and steal their gems. You can throw Bomb Plants at them, trigger traps and hope they fall into them, or just wait for them to be attacked by the massive Phantoms that roam each level. Spirit Tracks will be available on December 7. A brief Q&A conducted by email with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma is below.
Wired.com: We rarely see these kinds of direct Zelda game sequels with such quick turnaround time. What are you doing with Spirit Tracks to keep fans from feeling Zelda-fatigue?
Aonuma: That’s actually a different perspective than we had. We felt that fans would want a follow up to Phantom Hourglass as quickly as possible, so we set out to deliver it without much of a delay. This game has a lot of new content that will keep the experience fresh, especially the story which is different than what we have done in the past with the addition of Zelda to the quest. We’ve also updated the game engine to keep the play experience as smooth and fun as possible.
Wired.com: Why trains?
Aonuma: In Phantom Hourglass, the game featured a boat since most of the world was water-based. We wanted to keep a similar system in place for Spirit Tracks, but since this is a land-based world, we needed a new form of transportation. We felt that a train offered the best possibilities for exploration as players open up new routes and find new areas. My children and I still feel a sense of adventure when we ride trains in Japan, and I think we’ve effectively conveyed these feelings in the game.
Wired.com: Phantom Hourglass was revolutionary for its touch-screen controls. How have these changed in Spirit Tracks? Do you feel there were areas for improvement? A HERDSMAN tending aion power leveling his World of Warcraft Gold flock in a wow gold forest lost a Bull-calf from the fold. After a long wow gold and fruitless search, he made a vow that, if he could only discover the thief wow gold who had stolen the Calf, he would offer a lamb in sacrifice to Hermes, Pan, and the Guardian Deities of the forest. Not long wow gold afterwards, as he ascended a small hillock, he saw at its foot a Lion feeding on the Calf. Terrified at the sight, he lifted his eyes and his hands to heaven, and said: “Just now I vowed to offer a lamb to the Guardian Deities of the wow power leveling forest if I could only find out who had robbed me; but now that I have discovered the thief, I would willingly add a full-grown Bull to the Calf I have lost, if I may only secure my own aion gold escape from him in safety.” A FARMER placed nets on his newly-sown plowlands myyqqm1126 and caught a number of World of Warcraft Gold Cranes, which came to pick up his seed. With them he trapped a Stork that had fractured his leg in the net and was earnestly beseeching the Farmer to spare his life. “Pray save me, Master,” he said, “and let me go free this once. My broken limb should excite your pity. Besides, I am no Crane, I am a Stork, a bird of excellent character; and see how I love and slave for my father and mother. Look too, at my feathers– they are not the wow gold least like those of a Crane.” The Farmer laughed aloud and said, “It may be all as you say, I only know this: I have taken you with these robbers, the Cranes, and you must die in their company.” Birds of a feather flock together.
Aonuma: One of the elements of the control scheme we feel has improved is how the player executed the roll maneuver. We heard that in Phantom Hourglass this was too difficult to consistently perform, so we changed the input to a double tap on the touch screen. Beyond touch controls, we’ve added more use of the microphone, such as the Whirlwind and Spirit Flute items. We feel these microphone-based inputs are the best additions to the game’s control scheme.
Wired.com: Zelda doesn’t sell as well in Japan as it does overseas. Why? How can you fix this?
Aonuma: Good question, I wish I knew myself! In Japan, the series is mostly perceived as being challenging and geared toward more experienced players. This perception is hard to change. We felt that Phantom Hourglass offered an opportunity to introduce the series to new types of players, and we did notice this to some extent with more women playing the game. I think that the touch screen controls and camera perspective, in which you view the game from the top-down, does offer a different experience than the console games that may appeal to a broader audience.

as Alluring as Achievements |wow gold
This weekend I heard the familiar pop of an Xbox 360 notification, but for the first time, the notice read “Avatar Award Unlocked” rather than “Achievement Unlocked.” Even though my band of Left 4 Dead 2 survivors were in the middle of a campaign, I quickly thumbed the guide button on my controller to see what I’d earned. Turns out I’d crossed the 10,000 kill milepost and nabbed a nifty virtual black-and-white T-shirt bearing Left 4 Dead 2’s trademark zombie hand. First chance I got I edited my Xbox 360 avatar’s appearance (right) so that I was wearing the shirt. Achievements are one thing. They’re fun to chase, especially when they inspire you to stray outside the way you’d usually play a game. But I can see Avatar Awards being even more compelling.

After all, what good is an accomplishment if you can’t brag about it? For weeks, I’ve coveted an article of clothing on my friend Abbie’s avatar. She’s a much better Left 4 Dead player than me, a total surgeon with her shotgun. Her avatar is clad in the hot pink Depeche Mode shirt that Left 4 Dead 2 survivor Rochelle wears throughout the entire game. I want that virtual tee. But to get it, you have to lug a gnome through the entire “Dark Carnival” campaign, the one campaign I’ve yet to survive. I always find myself face-to-face with a tank when the chopper comes. Or even worse, I’ll be caught in a scrum of zombies and on the wrong side of the concert stage when our escape vehicle comes in for a rescue. ONE WINTER a Farmer aion leveling found a Snake stiff and cheap wow gold frozen with cold. He had power leveling compassion on it, and buy taking myyqqm1126 it up, placed it in buy wow gold his bosom. The Snake was quickly wow gold revived by the warmth, and resuming its natural instincts, bit its benefactor, inflicting on him a mortal wound. “Oh,” cried the Farmer wow gold with his last breath, “I am rightly served for pitying a scoundrel.” The greatest kindness will not bind the ungrateful. A YOUNG FAWN once said wow gold to his Father, “You are larger than a dog, and swifter, and more used to running, and you have your wow gold horns as a defense; why, then, O Father! do the hounds frighten you so?” He smiled, and said: “I know full wow power leveling well, my son, that all you say is true. I have the advantages you mention, but when I hear even the bark of a single cheap wow gold dog I feel ready to faint, and fly away as fast as I can.” A HEAVY WAGON was being dragged along a country cheap wow gold lane by a team of Oxen. The Axle-trees groaned and creaked terribly; whereupon the Oxen, turning round, thus addressed the wheels: “Hullo there! why do you make buy wow gold so much noise? We bear all the labor, and we, not you, ought to cry out.” Those who suffer most cry out the least. There’s also an Achievement for this feat. Blogger Tom Francis recently posted a visual account of his quest to complete Guardin’ Gnome. But on the PC, there’s no secondary carrot — that silly, audacious, barely related Depeche Mode T-shirt to go along with that Achievement. I probably would have given the Guardin’ Gnome Achievement a shot just for shits and giggles. But that Avatar Award, as purely aesthetic as it may be, is one more reason to master the rocking finale of “Dark Carnival.” Anybody want to give me some cover?

Race for a New Game Machine |wow gold

Race for a New Game Machine |wow gold
The most fascinating part of the console wars happened long before anyone had even heard of PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. Inside an Austin, Texas IBM lab, the engineers who’d spent the last two years working on the Cell processor for PS3 were given a new mandate from the top: They had to take the Cell’s PowerPC core and adapt it for Microsoft’s system, too. In The Race for a New Game Machine, released earlier this year, engineer David Shippy and manager Mickie Phipps give us the inside story, for better or worse. That is to say, this book is more of a primary source document than a history, laser-focused on Shippy’s experience as the chip’s architect. There’s only the barest of context, so don’t expect Shippy and Phipps to do much talking about the game business at large. Their world is segregated: the cubicle farms and lab stations of IBM. It’s a riveting book. It’s not as dry as you might think; the authors skim over a great deal of the technical aspects of chip creation and tell the human story of how middle-manager Shippy often gets caught in between his boss’ demands for higher quality, his employees’ complaints that it couldn’t be done, and the added stress of having to keep things secret from the Sony engineers on site — many of whom, he noted, ended up working on the Xbox 360’s chip without knowing it. A MOUNTAIN was once aion power leveling greatly buy agitated. Loud groans cheap wow gold and myyqqm1126 noises level were heard, and crowds aion gold of people came from all parts to see what was the matter. While they were assembled aion gold in anxious expectation of some terrible calamity, out came a Mouse. THE ASS and the Fox, having entered aion power leveling into partnership together for their mutual protection, went out into the forest aion power leveling to hunt. They had not proceeded far when they met a Lion. The Fox, seeing imminent danger, approached wow gold the Lion and promised to contrive for him the capture of the Ass if the Lion would pledge his word cheap aion gold not to harm the Fox. Then, upon assuring the Ass that he would not be injured, the Fox led him to a deep pit and cheap aion gold arranged that he should fall into it. The Lion, seeing that the Ass was secured, immediately clutched the Fox, and attacked the Ass at his leisure. New Game Machine’s writing is occasionally flawed. Sentences and phrases are repeated, the writers fall back on a crutch of using overly cutesy metaphors to describe how CPUs work and the language used to describe games is of the awkward, tortured sort that you used to find in mainstream newspaper stories of the early 1990s:

When the player swings the joystick and levels a weapon at a charging alien beast, then presses the button and showers it with lead, splattering it straight back to hell, the quality of the experience depends less on the fancy code written by the people at Microsoft than on the processor brains in the chip inside the box.

Plants in Ubisoft’s Avatar |wow gold

November 26th, 2009 by dimoyq

Plants in Ubisoft’s Avatar |wow gold
OSAKA — There weren’t many Western games on display at Games Japan Festa this year, and of those that were, nearly all had already been released in the United States. A notable exception was Avatar, the game based on the James Cameron film that is coming to theaters in December (it’s the one with the blue people). While the film’s trailer has led to much derision on the internet and a recent episode of South Park, the Ubisoft game has been drawing some positive attention for its use of stereoscopic 3-D graphics. Unfortunately, the demo that I played on the PlayStation 3 was not in 3-D, so there was little to visually distinguish Avatar from other third-person shooters: Your character is yet another armored space marine, although since Cameron’s own Aliens practically invented that particular archetype, perhaps we should cut this game some slack. At least the setting is a departure from the usual brown and gray levels that other shooters have done to death. Avatar opens in a rich alien jungle, full of colorful plants and animals.

Of course, all of the animals and some of the plants turn out to be hostile, so the Avatar demo was initially quite frustrating as everything on the screen seems to be trying to kill you. There are few visual clues to separate the dangerous plants from the benign background ones, and the packs of wolf-like animals who rush you tend to disappear in the thick undergrowth. You begin the game with two health recovery items and I didn’t see a single player reach the first objective without using one. If you run out, you must restart at the last checkpoint — but those items are not replenished. Things improve once you activate the first marker. Not only do you catch up with your colleagues, but you have access to an armored battle suit that protects you from the indigenous life forms that once tormented you. Mowing them down is surprisingly gratifying; I had only just encountered the creatures on this planet and I already ached to take revenge upon them. Slaying them also earns experience points, so seeing little numbers pop up after each kill made me feel like I was accomplishing something rather than being petty. Of course, the jungle isn’t just home to angry flowers and snarling quadrupeds. You and your men stumble into the territory of the aforementioned blue people, and they are not happy to see you. The fighting that follows is fast-paced and fun, as the natives are tall and agile but fall quickly once you actually shoot them. I found myself running in circles, picking off snipers in the trees and defending my fellow grunts as a smile crept onto my face. A TORTOISE, lazily level basking aion in the sun, complained leveling to cheap wow gold the sea-birds of her aion power leveling hard fate, that no one would teach her to fly. An Eagle, hovering near, heard her lamentation and demanded what reward she would give him if he aion power leveling would take her aloft and float her in the air. “I will give you,” she said, “all the riches aion gold of the Red Sea .” “I will teach you to fly then,” said the Eagle; and taking her up in his talons he carried her almost to the clouds suddenly he let aion gold her go, and she fell on a lofty mountain, dashing her shell to pieces . The Tortoise exclaimed in the moment of death: “I have deserved my present fate; for what had I to do with wings and clouds, who wow gold can with difficulty move about on the earth?’ If men had all they wished, they would be often ruined. A NUMBER of Flies were myyqqm1126 attracted to a jar of honey aion power level which had been overturned in a housekeeper’s room, and placing their feet in it, ate greedily. Their feet, however, became so smeared with the honey that they could not use their wings, nor release themselves, and were suffocated. Just as they were aion power level expiring, they exclaimed, “O foolish creatures that we are, for the sake cheap wow gold of a little pleasure we have destroyed ourselves.” Pleasure bought with pains, hurts. Unfortunately, the demo came to an abrupt end when I climbed into an unfamiliar vehicle. Pushing the analog sticks maneuvered the treads, but I did not move. I started pressing buttons to figure out which one controlled the gas pedal, but the first one I pressed launched a missile into the wall directly in front of me, destroying my ride and me along with it. It was not the same button that fired my normal gun, so I felt a little bit cheated. Also frustrating were a couple of glitches that detracted from the overall experience. The demo crashed the PS3 for the player in front of me, forcing a complete restart. Of greater concern was the odd behavior of some of the alien creatures, particularly during a fight with something I would describe as a “hammerhead stegosaurus” (pictured above). The beast initially charges towards you and forces you to run and shoot, but it had a tendency to abruptly stop running and simply stand in one place, waiting to die. The staff laughed whenever this happened, but two players behind me were clearly not amused. “That’s a bug, isn’t it?” they asked each other sourly. I’m guessing that the final game, due out in the U.S. on Dec 1, will be in better shape. Games based on films do have a bad reputation, but if had to pick a game that might break that trend, it’s Avatar.

Bayern still in the hunt |wow gold
Hamburg – Bayern Munich secured the 1-0 victory they needed at home to Maccabi Haifa Wednesday to retain any hope of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Already qualified Bordeaux did Bayern a favour in Group A, defeating Juventus 2-0 at home courtesy of goals from Fernando Menegazzo and Marouane Chamakh to assure themselves of top spot. Ivica Olic was the hero for Bayern, netting the only goal of the game to ease the pressure on coach Louis van Gaal and move the German giants to within a point of Juve ahead of the two sides’ final group match against each other at the Stadio Olimpico on December 8. “That was one of our best games,” said a relieved van Gaal afterwards.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid moved one step closer to making the next round for the 12th consecutive year after defeating FC Zurich 1-0, Gonzalo Higuain netting the only goal of the Group C encounter after 21 minutes. Real now have 10 points from five matches, two clear of AC Milan who could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Olympique Marseille. The French club lie one point further back ahead of their final group encounter against Madrid. Marco Borriello gave Milan an early lead but Lucho Gonzalez equalized for Marseille six minutes later to register his 10th goal of the competition. A MAN and a Lion sell traveled aion leveling together myyqqm1126 through World of Warcraft Gold the wow power leveling forest. They soon began to wow gold boast of their respective superiority to each other in strength and prowess. As they wow gold were disputing, they passed a statue carved in stone, which represented “a Lion wow gold strangled by a Man.” The traveler pointed to it and said: “See there! How strong wow gold we are, and how we prevail over even the king of beasts.” The wow power leveling Lion replied: “This statue was made by one of you men. If we World of Warcraft Gold Lions knew how to erect statues, you would see the Man placed under the paw of the Lion.” One story is good, till another is told. SOME CRANES made their feeding grounds on some plowlands World of Warcraft Gold newly sown with wheat. For a long time the Farmer, brandishing an empty sling, chased them away by the terror he inspired; but when the birds found sell wow gold that the sling was only swung in the air, they ceased to take any notice of it and would not move. The Farmer, on seeing this, charged his sling with stones, and killed a great number. The remaining birds at once forsook his fields, crying to each other, “It is time for us to be off to Liliput: for this man is no longer content to scare us, but begins to show us in earnest what he can do.” If words suffice not, blows must follow. Chelsea will be the seeded team from Group D after a second-half goal from Nicolas Anelka gave the Premier League leaders a 1-0 win away to also qualified FC Porto. “To win the group was the most important thing and we have reached our objective. To win here is not easy, but we got a good result and we are happy,” said Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The War of the Ancients |wow gold

The War of the Ancients |wow gold
The Highborne’s reckless use of magic sent ripples of energy spiraling out from the Well of Eternity and into the Great Dark Beyond. The streaming ripples of energy were felt by terrible alien minds. Sargeras – the Great Enemy of all life, the Destroyer of Worlds – felt the potent ripples and was drawn to their distant point of origin. Spying the primordial world of Azeroth and sensing the limitless energies of the Well of Eternity, Sargeras was consumed by an insatiable hunger. The great dark god of the Nameless Void resolved to destroy the fledgling world and claim its energies as his own. Sargeras gathered his vast Burning Legion and made his way towards the unsuspecting world of Azeroth. The Legion was comprised of a million screaming demons, all ripped from the far corners of the universe, and the demons hungered for conquest. Sargeras’ lieutenants, Archimonde the Defiler and Mannoroth the Destructor, prepared their infernal minions to strike. Queen Azshara, overwhelmed by the terrible ecstasy of her magic, fell victim to Sargeras’ undeniable power and agreed to grant him entrance to her world. Even her Highborne servitors gave themselves over to magic’s inevitable corruption and began to worship Sargeras as their god. To show their allegiance to the Legion, the Highborne aided their queen in opening a vast, swirling portal within the depths of the Well of Eternity. Once all his preparations had been made, Sargeras began his catastrophic invasion of Azeroth. The warrior-demons of the Burning Legion stormed into the world through the Well of Eternity and laid siege to the night elves’ sleeping cities. Led by Archimonde and Mannoroth, the Legion swarmed over the lands of Kalimdor, leaving only ash and sorrow in its wake. The demon warlocks called down searing infernals that crashed like hellish meteors into the graceful spires of Kalimdor’s temples. A band of burning, bloodletting killers known as the Doomguard marched across Kalimdor’s fields, slaughtering everyone in their path. Packs of wild, demonic felhounds ravaged the countryside unopposed. Though the brave Kaldorei warriors rushed to defend their ancient homeland, they were forced to give ground, inch by inch, before the fury of the Legion’s onslaught. A FOX one day fell into a deep aion well and power leveling could buy wow gold find no means of myyqqm1126 escape. A Goat, overcome wow gold with thirst, came to the same well, and seeing the Fox, inquired if the water wow gold was good. Concealing his sad plight under a merry guise, the Fox indulged in a lavish praise of the water, saying it was excellent beyond measure, and encouraging him to descend. The Goat, mindful only of his thirst, thoughtlessly wow gold jumped down, but just as he drank, the Fox informed him of the difficulty they were both in and suggested a scheme for their common escape. “If,” said he, “you will place your forefeet upon the wall and bend your head, I will run up your back and escape, and will help wow gold you out afterwards.” The Goat readily assented and the Fox leaped upon his back. Steadying himself with the Goat’s horns, he safely reached the mouth of the wow power leveling well and made off as fast as he could. When the Goat upbraided him for breaking his promise, he turned around and cried out, “You foolish old fellow! If you had as many brains in your head gold wow as you have hairs in your beard, you would never have gone down before you had inspected the way up, nor have exposed yourself to dangers from which you had no means of escape.” Look before you leap. TWO MEN were traveling together, when a Bear gold wow suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when buy wow gold the Bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could. The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear. “He gave me this advice,” his companion replied. “Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger.” Misfortune tests the sincerity of friends. It fell to Malfurion Stormrage to find help for his beleaguered people. Stormrage, whose own brother, Illidan, practiced the Highborne’s magics, was incensed by the growing corruption amongst the upper class. Convincing Illidan to forsake his dangerous obsession, Malfurion set out to find Cenarius and muster a resistance force. The beautiful young priestess, Tyrande, agreed to accompany the brothers in the name of Elune. Though Malfurion and Illidan shared a love for the idealistic priestess, Tyrande’s heart belonged to Malfurion alone. Illidan resented his brother’s budding romance with Tyrande, but knew that his heartache was nothing compared to the pain of his magical addiction. Illidan, who had grown dependent on magic’s empowering energies, struggled to keep control of his nearly overwhelming hunger to tap the Well’s energies once again. However, with Tyrande’s patient support, he was able to restrain himself and help his brother find the reclusive demigod, Cenarius. Cenarius, who dwelt within the sacred Moonglades of the distant Mount Hyjal, agreed to help the night elves by finding the ancient dragons and enlisting their aid. The dragons, led by the great red leviathan, Alexstrasza, agreed to send their mighty flights to engage the demons and their infernal masters.

Games Should Permit War Crimes |wow gold

Games Should Permit War Crimes |wow gold
A recent study by two Swiss human rights groups has found that videogames allowed gamers to defy the Geneva Conventions, leaving the groups “astonished” by the “practically complete absence of rules or sanctions” in games like Call of Duty. The researchers weren’t calling for the censorship of games, or even blaming them for real-world violence. Instead, they’re concerned that videogames project an erroneous message about the way war is waged. But what if games all followed the Geneva Conventions to a T? These games would be sending an even more erroneous message. If, by some miracle, games changed overnight and all virtual battles were conducted to the letter of international law, they’d present an even less realistic picture of war by suggesting that armed conflicts can and are routinely fought without ever overstepping the boundaries. These law-abiding games would whitewash reality.

We want games to send the message that war needs oversight, that we need groups to act as watchdogs and ensure that those who wage war don’t cross the line. The over-the-top, anything-goes approach of most videogame conflicts does just that. It paints warfare as a costly, unappealing thing, an undertaking that destroys lives and demolishes everything humanity has sought to build. Game stories do tend to express conflict in a just-so way that mutes the true cost of war: Good guys kill bad guys, the end. In reality, wars are fought with rules and complexities that are difficult to express in a game. There’s an aftermath that lasts for generations. A videogame that tried harder to express the rules of engagement and the laws that govern war could very well be interesting, informative and fun. The America’s Army games, for example, penalize players for not following the rules of engagement. But playing videogames without similar penalties doesn’t mean you’re learning the lesson that wanton, unchecked violence is appropriate. If there’s one message that videogames have delivered again and again, it’s that sometimes wars must be fought, but the costs are always great. Let’s keep it that way.

The Bad Company Beta |wow gold

The Bad Company Beta |wow gold
The ebb and flow of combat in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, currently in beta test for PlayStation 3, feels immediately familiar. That’s because Electronic Arts’ DICE studio has been tweaking, polishing and reworking its formula for goal-oriented, first-person combat since 2002. Just this summer, Battlefield 1943 re-familiarized us with this particular brand of brawl, where vehicles, air strikes and stationary weapons help create a heightened sense of chaos. Bad Company 2 doesn’t feel quite as harried. The fights are slightly less gonzo. Maybe that’s because were no manned aircraft in the one level being tested in the beta. The air combat in 1943 made the game incredibly unpredictable. One second, you’d be creeping up on an enemy encampment, the next you’d be pulverized by a kamikaze pilot. I’m sure choppers, which will be included in the final version of Bad Company, will bring back some of that craziness.

Arica Harbour is a linear battleground that sprawls from a high desert encampment down through an abandoned village and across a bridge to a train depot. Americans have four positions to attack and destroy. Russian defenders must resist the push. I found myself sticking to the Engineer class, sneaking up behind enemy tanks to take them out with a rocket-propelled grenade. As I played, I unlocked better weapons and a few character upgrades, like the ability to carry more ammo. If you’ve even touched Modern Warfare, the upgrades will feel instantly familiar. There’s a little less going on here — Bad Company 2 (at this point, at least) doesn’t have any of the purely aesthetic rewards that Modern Warfare 2 does. But while the rewards are fewer and farther between, they still compel you to keep going. I played the same map over and over again, hoping to power up my Engineer’s tank-busting power. Finally, I earned the right to lay down anti-tank mines. For my first couple of spawns as a defender, I chose the mines as my kit loadout. I spent a life or two setting up a deadly nest of explosives anywhere an enemy tank would enter our perimeter. Then on my next spawn I switched from mines to the standard rocket-propelled grenade.

My worst enemies were snipers, guys in ghillie suits who picked at me from positions on the outskirts of the maps. Die enough at some jerk’s hands and they’ll become your “Nemesis.” Seek them out and take revenge and the experience reward for the kill will be greater. I used the word “linear” earlier when describing the Arica Harbour map. Don’t take that as an insult. I like the way the corridor of playable real-estate forces players to create a line, a distinct front where a good part of the battle takes place. Flanking feels more meaningful when you can tell exactly where the enemy is or wants to be. Storming a position feels that much better when you do it with four or five allies at your side. The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta test is currently open to those who pre-order the game. The retail version of the game is due in March 2010.

Not to mention the fact that, depending on one’s definition of “quality,” I could think of a few people who might argue otherwise. Easily the best scene in the book is when Ken Kutaragi waltzes into the IBM labs, sits down in a meeting room, and tells the head of the project: “Eight is beautiful.” The Cell processor, as it turns out, was originally designed to have six cores. That changed to eight midway through the design process, throwing a humongous wrench into the works, because Kutaragi decided that eight was a more attractive number.
I believe this story.
Understandable general lack of context aside, the authors conclude the book by saying that both Sony and Microsoft “were extremely effective at achieving their goals” and “have done exceedingly well in the market.” Exceedingly well? Even if exceedingly was just a synonym for very, that claim would be suspect. Neither console has exceeded much of anything — not analyst expectations, not last generation’s performance of PlayStation 2. Not to mention the fact that the authors skim over Kutaragi’s ouster from Sony, laying the blame on the executive’s “outspoken criticism” of the company’s policies and not floating the idea that it might have had something to do with his giant $600 boondoggle of a product launch. Similarly, Microsoft is praised for turning around its chip design in two years, but there is not a word to be found about the low yields or the massively high hardware failure rate. Anyway, I’m done picking nits — if you haven’t read The Race for a New Game Machine because you’re afraid it’ll be a dry walkthrough of circuit design and inside baseball, put that out of your mind. It’s rare to get the firsthand behind-the-scenes story of something like this, and it provides a valuable new perspective on the console wars. Put this on the gaming-book shelf that I know you have.

We have to be very careful |wow gold
It’s easy to claim that gaming violence has no correlation with real world violence, but those arguments are a bit hollow if you can’t provide data to corroborate; or even better, a fancy line graph. The graph makes no direct claims towards a relationship between real world and gaming violence, though it’s interesting to see an inversely proportional trend of violent gaming releases and incidents of real crime. For those doubting the graph’s figures, have a look at the data on which it was based: a relatively recent survey of national violent crime rates published by the U.S. Department of Justice.
We have to be very careful with how we state this information.
While it’s easy to jump to the conclusion, these facts can not prove that violent video games cause a REDUCTION of violent crimes. There are simply way to many factors at play to make this claim. This would be a separate set of studies to determine what the real factors are and even then may never be truly ’solved’. What this information does say is that claims of increases of violent crime over time are inherently false, regardless of what is being pointed to. We can safely state that violent video games have not increased violent crime at a national level for the reason that there isn’t an increase of violent crime to begin with. Obviously there are more complexities in the situation to say that any one factor is the deciding factor. But isn’t that the problem? There are certain lawmakers point to violent video games as a reason seem to be interested in investing time and money on appearances that they are solving existing social problems. Obviously these resources would be better spent investing in long-term solutions, but these solutions are not easily communicated to a voter. Here’s a title idea for anyone to take on. Interactive entertainment is a very strong and powerful media that can make the depth of a subject matter more accessible to an audience. As SimCity provides accessible depth of urban planning and zoning, perhaps a title exploring social and economics to better illustrate the complexities of violent crime and related social woes would help create a better informed society.
